The Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP Charles Oteng, has warned that under no circumstance should the police refer a criminal case to any group or individual for settlement apart from the law court.
DCOP Oteng was speaking to Space FM’s Yaw Owusu on Space Morning Flight in reaction to allegation by the secretary of the Berekum Moslem Youth Association (Nima Boys), that the Berekum police sometimes refer cases to his outfit for settlement.
He said it is an offence for any person or group of persons to be allowed to settle a criminal case.
The police boss however admitted that, sometimes certain cases can be referred to opinion leaders and family heads for amicable settlement, stressing that it does not apply in criminal cases.
Meanwhile, the Berekum Divisional Police Commander has told Space FM that he will never comment on any issue that has to do with the Nima Boys in Berekum.
The Nima boys and the police have recently been engaged in accusation and counter accusations following the arrest of one member of their association who was engaged in a confrontation a football supporter.
The Nima boys claim their member was wrongfully remanded while his assailant was set free. They alleged the police leveled wrong charges against their member.
The Nima boys said the police have not been fair to them by preferring wrong charges against them any time they are involved in any case. The police however believe the Nima boys are notorious.
