The Assembly Member for the Awuah Newtown Electoral Area in the Sunyani West District, Hon. Richard Agyemang Badu, has called on the NDC government to urgently release funds for the completion of the Sunayni Police Barracks.

When completed each of the three blocks with four floors can accommodate sixty Junior officers or eight families of senior officers. There are other facilities such as school, clinic, church among others for the barracks.

Speaking to Space FM in Sunyani, Hon. Agyemang Badu, who is the chairman for Justice and Security Sub Committee of the Sunyani West District Assembly, said security plays an important role in the development of the nation and the police must be adequately accommodated to enable them perform their duties effectively.

The police barracks located at Abesim near Sunyani was started somewhere in the 1990s but work on it came to a stand still until the NPP administration provided funds for its continuation in 2003.

When it appeared the project was finally going to be completed, it once again came to a halt with the usual lack of funds as the reason.

Hon. Agyemang Badu urged the police administration to put in more pressure to enable government release funds for the completion of the housing project.
He expressed worry about poor manner police officers are accommodated, adding that the situation affects them in several ways. He also called on churches, NGO’s and philanthropists to assist the police in providing adequate security.

When contacted, the Managing Director of Asuobisi Construction Limited, one of the construction firms working on the project, Mr. George Obiri Tabiri told our News Editor, Francis Owusu-Ansah that indeed funds for the completion of the project have delayed.

He said the situation has adversely affected his company’s relation with its bankers, the National Investment Bank (NIB) since it failed to repay loans granted it.
At the time of filing this report, Asuobisi Construction Limited was making an appearance at a Kumasi Commercial Court for failing to repay loans granted it by the NIB.

He added that recently the contractors working on the project were assured of funds but yet again it could not materialize. Mr. Obiri Tabiri added that he would presently need about GH¢ 200,000 to complete his block which is at the fourth floor.

Meanwhile the Brong-Ahafo Police Commander, DCOP Seth Charles Oteng, has appealed to the Regional Coordinating Council to assist in completing the police barracks to address the accommodation problems facing the police in the region. He made the appeal during the maiden meeting between the police command and the Regional Coordinating Council in Sunayni.
