Executives of the Sunyani East Constituency of the NPP have unanimously accepted the proposed amendments to the constitution of the party.
The proposed major reform is the reduction of the party’s presidential aspirants from last year’s seventeen to only three.
At a special Constituency Conference which brought together all polling station executives, some elders and opinion leaders of the party, delegates from the constituency were urged to vote in favour of the reforms during the up coming delegates conference.
Briefing the media about the stand of the constituency, the MP for Sunyani East, Hon. Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh noted that the proposed amendments which would see an increase in the Electoral College from about 2,500 to 300,000, would promote party cohesion and unity at the national level.
“Majority of the people in the party feel the broadening of the Electoral College would enable many people have a say in the lection of the party’s flagbearer”, he said.
Again he said party members are glad that at the constituency polling station level, some innovations are being introduced to enable broader participation in electing officers.
Hon. Ameyaw Cherermeh pointed out that though some people within the party are against the proposed amendments, the voice of the majority would stand carry the day and called for concerted efforts at improving the image of the party.
He argued that the when the Electoral College is increased, the party would make some savings since there would not be the need to camp all the delegates at one place with its attendant hotel and transport bills.
“When the number of delegates who would elect the flagbearer increase, they would vote at their various constituencies and the party would not have to pay so much to camp them at hotels outside their areas”, he explained.
The reform would also eliminate the perceived influence of delegates before and during the election of the flagbearer.
