K.B Asante calls for prompt action on Achimota lands

An elder statesman and a former chairman of the Achimota school board K.B Asante, says the call on government to take over encroached lands belonging to the School is a step in the right direction.

The Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Professor Mike Ocquaye on Wednesday February 3, on the floor of parliament made a direct appeal to President Mills to intervene and save the Achimota School from activities of encroachers.

The Achimota School is reportedly under siege from the activities of developers who have encroached lands belonging to the school. The situation has led to a looming health crises at the school as activities of the encroachers have compromised the schools’ sewage system.

Last week, the Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA) ordered for the immediate closure of the school due to the health implications of the spillage of human excreta from the school’s sewage system.

Speaking to Citi News, K.B Asante, said the assertions that government should take over the lands is a good suggestion, however the root of the matter must also be exploited.

“If the president takes this action, yes, it will solve the situation but I will rather want us to go to the root of the problem…let get to the bottom of the problem. It may be Achimota, it may be Mfantsipim, a private person or somewhere else…we all have equal access to the law so the right thing must be done”. K.B Asante said.

The Achimota School which was built in 1927 is one of the oldest schools in the country.

It is alleged that some luxurious properties around the Achimota School are owned by political big wigs in and out of government who are believed to be frustrating attempts by the AMA to demolish the said properties on the encroached lands.

But K.B Asante said the right procedures must be followed notwithstanding where the person who owns a property there belongs or hails from.

“The president should use the kind of power influence he has to get the legal systems to work…if I buy a land and later it is proven that it is for someone else then I lose it but if he tells lies, if he gets people to go to court to commit perjury the court should be strong enough that such people are jailed when they are caught” He added.
